Tampa Bay Fishing Report
Gone Fishing Capt. Larry Blue 6/08
All eyes are on the Gulf of Mexico and the hearts of everyone beats for a hopeful end to the oil that pollutes Mother Ocean and ruins lives. No one would have ever thought that this could happen. But it has and we just now have to deal with the aftermath without ordeal. Continuing east winds have prevailed to keep the oil spill contained for the most part to the west of our area. We are hopeful that the Suncoast will remain unspoiled.
Now for my offshore fishing report: King mackerel and Spanish mackerel have remained in the area. Much to the surprise of many there have been several large kingfish caught around the bay area at many of the offshore reefs. The abundant baitfishes have kept the kings well fed and happy enough to stick around. Spanish mackerel are normally here throughout the summer months, but kingfish usually take off after the spring run. Early mornings are usually the best time to fish for these species; however we have been catching them well into mid-day.
Red snapper has been the hot topic on the docks as the season opened on the first of June. The season is short so many anglers are making the best of it and heading to the offshore deep water fishing grounds to take their fair share. Red snapper has made quite a comeback in the past few years. Just ten years ago red snapper was almost unheard of if only as a bi-catch. In the past couple years red snapper has almost overrun the bottom displacing even big grouper. The competition for bait is fierce between the two species. Some fishermen are frustrated by the snapper while fishing for grouper, especially during the snappers closed season. Be that as it may, red snapper is open for the time being and you should get ready for some arm testing fishing if you plan on going.
Summertime is shark-time. There have been a number of really big sharks feeding on the area reefs especially where the mackerel species can be found. The sharks target the mackerels as well as the baitfish that the mackerel feed on. It is an incredible sight to see a shark running through a school feeding like a child popping a handful of M&Ms into their mouth.
Blackfin tuna and amberjack are making a good showing. Blackfin tuna can be found in the deepwater around 30 miles or more offshore. Generally they travel in schools so once one is located more should be nearby. Amberjack and tuna frequent the springs and large wrecks found offshore. A strong conviction for fishing and a stronger back is needed for this fish. If you hang into one of these guys my only advice is to hang on, you will be in for a battle you wont soon forget.
For the early morning beach-goers, if you look offshore you may see the silver backs of one of the worlds most sought after gamefish; tarpon. Tarpon can be seen as they rise to gulp a mouthful of air momentarily exposing themselves. Just a little splash of water is all you might see as they swish their tail headed back to the bottom. For the astute angler this is when you want to be ready to cast your baited hook or lure. Fishing for tarpon has become an addiction for some and for others a consternation. What frustration and what joy comes from fishing for tarpon. If only one jump or a line searing run is all you get, I guarantee that you will be hooked even if the tarpon isnt!

Testimonials
Fishing Charters:
Larry,
My boys can't stop talking about the wonderful time we had fishing with you and Randy! They have even nicknamed their grandfather Captain Quinn for the "JAWS" guppie he pulled in before giving up the poles to us all together!! Actually, the Barracuda was better eating than the Mackeral! Thank you both for such a memorable morning. If ever a dumbass asks "Why so much?", be sure to inform them they couldn't even begin to pay the price for the memories!!!
Thanks,
Scott Childress
Captain Larry and mate Ron,
I just wanted to thank you for taking me and my son out fishing June 14 2010, it was an amazing trip. You knew where to go to put us on some great fishing spots; we definitely went home tired and smelling of fish (a sign of a great fishing trip). We will definitely recommend and use you the next time we come to the St. Pete Beach area. Thank you so much.

Boat Transport:
First I wanted to thank you for the incredible tow work yesterday on my 40 Richardson. Ive never met anyone more capable of getting the job done and the service was simply second to none! I have attached a photo of the towing in action. Please feel free to use my recommendation and this photo for marketing purposes if you like.
As I mentioned I have brain cancer and my dream is to restore my boat to live aboard. I have 12 years of boating experience but all of it was on Lake Mead and Ive never owned a boat larger than 28. I was wondering if you would be interested in being listed as a crew member/operator of Jane Doe? It would help me significantly if I was able to list someone with the your depth of experience to my insurance company. If so please complete the attached form and send it back to me as soon as possible. If not I completely understand. I dont know anyone in Clearwater yet so I thought it couldnt hurt to ask.
Thanks again Larry
