Gone fishing                              Capt. Larry Blue

Fishing Archives              While we may have to watch the fronts that move through the area, the fishing
when we can get out is great. Grouper has been the primary target fish and there are
still many other species that are providing a good bite. The best time is the days
before a front moves down from the north. So when the weather report warns of the
impending cold about to hit, gear up the tackle and be ready to hang into some really
    good fishing.

The best fishing has been in depths of 30 to about 60 feet of water.
Remember that the water temperatures have fallen a little and it might take a few
extra minutes to get the fish to bite, just have patience. As usual in the winter the
smaller fish move in first and bigger fish will come to check out the activity. Keep
those cut baits going and you should find successful catches.

Recently we have found a bunch of flounder on the hard bottom while fishing
for other species. They are more apt to be found on sandy bottom, or sand/shell
bottom. But they will also move over the limestone in search of a meal. A treat for
any angler wherever they are found.

Amberjack for those that really want to test their angling ability and strength
can be had in 80 to 120 feet of water. Live baits are usually the best, but many are
finding that large silver jigs can be a real challenge.

Closer to the beach we are finding a good supply of silver trout. For those in
smaller boats this is a good way to get on the gulf and catch fish without running miles
offshore and out of sight of land. The trout can be found in as little as 8 to 18 feet of
water, just a couple hundred feet from shore. They will take just about any cut bait,
for those that want to be sporting about their angling use of a jig will take a good
    account.

Back-water fishing for trout, snook and redfish is going great. Look for
sheepshead fishing to really pickup in the next month. Many will be found around the
area bridges and along many of the seawalls.

Good luck and good fishing, Capt. Larry
