Gone fishing                              Capt. Larry Blue

Fishing Archives              Spring is just around the corner and we are expecting the return of one of
our favorite visitors, King Mackerel. King Mackerel usually make their appearance
around the 15th of March, but a few will be taken before the main body of the
school shows up. Perhaps you want to be the one to claim catching the first of the
season? We have already had a couple of strikes on baits meant for other species.
Earlier this week, we caught a few Spanish mackerel. This is the smaller
cousin of the King. Normally there is an abundance of Spanish mackerel just off the
beach and outside the pass in the early morning. Trolling will take a cooler full. But
for those that like light-tackle fishing this is a great fish to target.
We have also seen a number of Little Tunny closing in on the bait schools.
They are easy to find, just look for a flock of birds circling over the surface and
diving in now and then. Little Tunny are members of the Tuna family. While they
aren’t much to eat, they sure can bend a fishing rod. Soon the offshore waters will
be full of the Tunny, Spanish and the King mackerel.
In the mean time, we are looking to catch a few grouper and snapper to
bide our time. Although grouper are closed in Federal Water, we can still take them
in State waters. The line begins at 9 miles from shore. As long as we stay inside
State waters, we will be alright. Be sure to check on the laws and regulations before
you go out. The Marine Patrol won’t be happy if they find you caught fish that have
a closed season or under sized.
Closer to shore there are abundant schools of silver trout. Usually found less
than a mile from the Gulf beaches. It isn’t hard to fill a cooler full of these small, but
tasty fish. Just be selective and let the little ones go until next year. Speaking of “little
ones” this fish is one of the best to introduce kids to the sport of fishing. The trout
are more than willing to hit a baited hook, or just about any small lure. So come on
grandpa, gather up the gang and take them fishing!

Good luck and good fishing, Capt. Larry
