Gone fishing                              Capt. Larry Blue

Fishing Archives              Spring has sprung, as far as the king mackerel are concerned. The first days
of March brought them to our doorstep in good form. They were here about 2
weeks earlier than normal. Most years they slip in during the Ides of March.
Trolling spoons around one of the area man-made reefs put over 25 kings in
the boat. Most were a little small but still made for some hot fishing on an otherwise
chilly day. The kings were stacked up over a bait school and were fairly easy
pickings. Most of the kings wouldn't quite make the Federal Regulation of 24 inches,
but a couple did. However, it was a little early and the bigger kings are usually right
behind the little guys. So make sure you have everything ready for the pending
onslaught. By the time of this making the press the big kings will be offshore waiting
    for you.
The first fish are scattered out and trolling will take more than live bait. But if
you want the big smokers.. live bait is the best bet. In essence you have a choice,
quality over quantity.. or the other way around. If you are trying to please the
younger anglers, they want action, not one BIG fish, they want LOTS.
Grouper opens in Federal Water on the 15th. Many anglers will be back out
searching for one of the most sought after fish for table fare. Grouper are considered
by many to be a very good eating fish. They are also noted to be a doggedly
determined fighter when hooked; they do their best to stay on the bottom while you
struggle to bring them up. It might be touch and go for the first couple seconds after
hooking one. But with determination you can win over this tenacious over sized bass.
Inshore the pompano have made their way inside the passes. For now the best
bet is using chunks of shrimp rather than the whole live shrimp, as the pinfish are
making short work of the live ones. Right now the pompano aren't interested in
chasing jigs, at least for the time being.
Also inshore, the redfish are showing up on some of the backwater grassflats.
Look for the holes that dot the flats. A stealthy approach should get you close
enough to fire off a few casts and hook this bruiser of the backwater.

Good luck and good fishing, Capt. Larry
