Congratulations to Joey Maisano on his catch of a
32.72 pound king |
mackerel and to win in the 15th Annual Suncoast Kingfish Classic
Tournament held |
| |
at
Gators on the Pass, Treasure Island . Morgan Kien, Maisano’s
teammate on |
| |
“Insta-Gator”, gaffed the fish that would win that tournament
for them. The fish took |
| |
a
slow-trolled bluerunner used for bait. |
| |
| |
There are still a number of big king mackerel in the
area just waiting for you |
| |
to
take your chance to catch them. We can look for this to be the
case for several |
| |
more
weeks. After the water warms they will move up along the coast
towards the |
| |
mouth of the Mississippi and from Texas to the Louisiana coast.
But don’t wait for |
| |
that
to happen, get out there now! |
| |

The best bet is morning fishing for Spanish
mackerel. There are a lot of them |
| |
off
the beaches and on the flats inside of Tampa Bay . Just look for
the schools of |
| |
baitfish to locate your quarry. The mackerel will circle the
school of bait picking off |
| |
the
stragglers. An early start will be necessary to catch yourself a
few for lunch. |
| |
Recent catches of as many as 100 fish in just a few hours has
not been unusual. While |
| |
the
limit for Spanish mackerel is 15 fish per person, do not take
more than you can |
| |
use
fresh in a few days, and release the rest. Conservation is
essential for the future of |
the
fishery. |
| |
Barracuda will take over on most of the offshore
reefs and wrecks. A well |
| |
placed and gang hooked mackerel is
a good bait for them. Often we have a problem |
| |
with
the cuda taking the fish we hookup, as we try to boat them.
| |
| |
Also, look for the invasion of cobia on the same
reefs and wrecks. Live bait |
| |
is
the norm but they will also take lures intended for other
species. Just be sure to |
| |
play
the cobia until near exhaustion as onboard this fish can really
wreck the interior |
| |
of a
boat and its’ occupants. (That is to say, only if you intend to
keep the fish, |
| |
otherwise release before he tires too much.) |
| |
| |
Bottom fishing for grouper is just now picking up
inshore. Recently we |
| |
started fishing on a certain spot offshore and were doing well.
That is, doing well until |
| |
the
sharks moved in and took most of the fish that we caught after
that point. |
| |
| |
Otherwise, shark fishing is going to be a good bet
for evening fishing offshore. |
| |
Fresh bait and chum slick is just about all you need to get
started. |

Good luck and good fishing, Capt.
