Gone fishing                              Capt. Larry Blue

     2/20/2007
Fishing Archives               We are looking forward to the coming of spring and the return of one of our
favorite visitors, King Mackerel. King mackerel usually make their appearance
around the 15th of this month, but more than a few will be taken before the main
body of the school shows up.

We have had a mild winter and all through the season kings have been the hot

topic of many fishing along our coast. We have been rewarded with many good
catches even though winter is not the time we normally catch them. You never know
when a king might strike. As anglers fishing for grouper drop a bait towards the
bottom a passing kingfish may hit it during its decent, surprising the fisherman. If the
angler isn’t on the ball he may end up with a tangled mess of fishing line on his reel
from the backlash. Of course, we will soon be trying to catch kings and hopefully
    won’t be as off guard.

In the mean time, we are looking to catch a few grouper and snapper to bide
our time. Although grouper are closed in Federal Water, we can still take them in
State Waters. The line begins at 9 miles from shore. As long as we stay short of 9
miles, we will be alright. Be sure to check on the laws and regulations before you go
out. The Marine Patrol won’t be happy if they find you caught fish out of season or
    under sized.

Closer to shore we are still making good on the abundant silver trout that are

all along the Gulf beaches. It isn’t hard to fill a cooler full of these small, but tasty fish.
Just be selective and let the little ones go until next year. Speaking of “little ones” this
fish is one of the best to introduce kids to the sport of fishing. The trout are more than
willing to hit a baited hook, or just about any small lure. So come on grandpa, gather
up the gang and take them fishing!

Good luck and good fishing, Capt. Larry
